| Ways to Learn Audio Engineering | Oct 08 2011, 2:51 PM |

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to know audio engineering; maybe you’ve even imagined of having your own recording studio. If you have, you might be asking yourself where to start – how to get your foot in the front door, so to speak. Point is, getting started can be simple all you have to do is to get started. The great news is that there is not just one pathway to learn audio engineering, and you have the liberty to explore the pathway that’s ideal for you. That being stated, there are three general ways people learn these skills, and sometimes they work in tandem with one another. Go to school. Many colleges offer diplomas in different forms of communication and media, and sometimes these fields will include some type of training in audio engineering and recording. Likewise, there are also vocational institutions that focus in providing trainings for careers in media. The drawback in college education is the possibility of the course load being unable to meet your requirements because it is too generalized or the lack of the proper equipment The more specialized schools tend to keep equipment better updated, and overall most likely provide better training; but you will also probably pay dearly for that luxury. These courses can take between one and four years to complete, and you may require some sort of internship at a recording facility afterward... Read More |

Research Project: Aligning Engineering Education with Engineering Practice The overarching hypothesis for this NSF funded study is that the current educational system is inadequately aligned with engineering practice. That is, experiences in high school and college give students an incomplete picture of what it means to be an engineer, and of the skills and knowledge they need to develop to become one. Therefore, potential engineering talent is lost at all stages as students move from high school to college and into professional practice. We hypothesize that aligning the engineering education pathways with the skills, knowledge, values, and ways of thinking of practicing engineers (their "epistemic frame" ) will lead to and retain a broader and more diverse engineering workforce. This project is studying (1) the engineering practice to identify the skills, knowledge, values, epistemologies, and ways of thinking of effective engineers; (2) STEM teacher and guidance counselor beliefs to better understand how classroom and counseling connections inform and/or hinder future studies and careers in engineering; (3) the learning experiences of freshman engineering students to determine what influences them to enter and remain in the field of engineering; and (4) the intended and enacted curriculum within high school pre-engineering classes (Project Lead the Way-PLTW) to investigate the level of integration of STEM content. ..
